Norwich Terriër

History

The Norwich Terrier originates from Great Britain and originated in the 19th century. These dogs were bred to hunt rats and other small animals in farms and warehouses. The Norwich Terrier was created by crossing the Cairn Terrier and the Irish Terrier to produce a dog that was both small and robust, with a good prey drive.

In the beginning, the Norwich Terriers were called "Cantab Terriers", named after Cambridge University in England. Later this name was changed to Norwich Terrier, after the city of Norwich in the east of England. The Norwich Terrier was first recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1932 and came to America in the 1960s.

Character

The Norwich Terrier has a strong character and is one of the smaller terriers. They are very loyal to their owner and have a great personality. This breed is known for its intelligence and self-confidence. They have high energy levels and often enjoy being outside to run and play.

Norwich Terriers have a strong hunting instinct so it's important to socialize them properly to ensure they are comfortable around other pets and people. They are often friendly and sociable, but have a natural tendency to protect their owner and their territory.

Health

As with all dog breeds, it is important to have the Norwich Terrier checked regularly for health issues. One of the most common health problems in Norwich Terriers is eye problems, such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and lens luxation.

Other health problems that can occur in this breed include patellar luxation, liver disease and allergies. It is therefore important to have your Norwich Terrier checked by a vet and to provide proper nutrition and exercise.

Care

The Norwich Terrier has a double coat consisting of a soft undercoat and a harsh, wiry outer coat. It's important to brush and trim your Norwich Terrier's coat regularly to prevent tangles and matting. It is recommended that you have your Norwich Terrier professionally trimmed every six weeks or so.
