History
The Mastín del Pirineo comes from the Pyrenees, which separate the north of Spain and the south of France. It is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, whose origins date back to Roman times. The dog was originally bred to protect herds of sheep and cattle from predators such as wolves and bears, as well as thieves who wanted to get their hands on what wasn't theirs. The breed was selected based on its size, strength, stamina and independence.
Character
The Mastín del Pirineo is a large and strong dog with a calm and confident character. The breed is intelligent, loyal and very protective of its owners and their property. These dogs have a high tolerance for children and other pets, but can be wary of strangers. Because of their independent nature, they need consistent training and socialization to show their best behavior. The Mastín del Pirineo is not particularly active and therefore does not have high exercise requirements. A daily walk and some time to relax is all it takes.
Health
In general, the Mastín del Pirineo is a healthy breed with an average life expectancy of 10-12 years. However, as with many large breeds, they can be prone to hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. These conditions can be prevented by breeding with healthy parents and by making sure the dog does not become overweight. In addition, the dog's eyes and ears should be checked regularly to detect potential problems early.
Care
The Mastín del Pirineo has a thick, double coat that needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and tangled hair. In the spring and fall, these dogs shed significantly and additional grooming is required to reduce shedding. Because of their size and strength, these dogs need a lot of room to exercise. They can be kept indoors, but do need a large yard where they can stretch out and run around.
