Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier

History

The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier is one of four terrier breeds that originated in Ireland. They were bred in the Wicklow Mountains of County Wicklow where they were used to control vermin and as guard dogs. These dogs were also used to pull carts, and some people claim that the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier is in fact the only terrier ever used as a working horse.

Character

The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier is known for its determination, courage and devotion to its owner. While they may be a little reserved around strangers, these dogs are loving and loyal to their family. They have a strong prey drive so it is important to properly socialize them with other animals. They are also intelligent and eager to learn so it's important to challenge them mentally with training and games.

Health

In general, the Irish Glen of Imaal Terriers are healthy dogs. However, there are a few conditions that owners should be aware of. Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and allergies are common in this breed. It is also important to keep their ears clean and dry to prevent ear infections.

Care

The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier has a dense coat that requires little maintenance. A weekly brush and a bath every few months is usually enough to keep the coat healthy and shiny. Because these dogs are active by nature, it is important to exercise them daily to prevent obesity.
