Hrvatski Ovcar

History

The Hrvatski Ovcar, also known as the Croatian Sheepdog, is a relatively new breed of dog that originated in Croatia. This breed was created in the 1960s by crossing German Shepherd Dogs and native Croatian Sheepdogs. The Hrvatski Ovcar was originally bred as a working dog to herd livestock and protect it from predators. Today, the breed is also used as a watchdog and companion dog.

Character

The Hrvatski Ovcar is known for its loyal and protective nature. These dogs are highly intelligent and quick learners, making them excellent watchdogs and companion dogs. They are very devoted to their owner and are naturally protective of their family and home. The breed is naturally calm and balanced, but can also be very energetic and needs plenty of exercise.

Health

In general, the Hrvatski Ovcar is a healthy breed with no common health problems. However, as with any breed, they can be prone to certain health problems including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and eye problems. It is therefore important to have your Hrvatski Ovcar checked regularly by a vet and to give it a healthy diet and plenty of exercise to maintain its health.

Care

The Hrvatski Ovcar needs little care. Their short, thick coat only needs occasional brushing to remove loose hair and keep their skin healthy. It is also important to brush their teeth and trim their nails when necessary. Being highly energetic, they need plenty of exercise, including walks and time to play. It is also important to give your Hrvatski Ovcar plenty of mental stimulation through training and games.
