Dachshund

History

The Dachshund, also called Dachshund, originates from Germany. The breed was originally bred for badger hunting, hence the name Dachshund (dachs means badger in German). Due to its long, flexible body and short legs, the Dachshund was good at crawling into badger holes. Later, the breed was also used for hunting rabbits and foxes. In the meantime, the Dachshund has mainly become a companion dog and is appreciated worldwide for its special appearance and friendly character.

Character

The Dachshund is known for its headstrong character. He is intelligent, curious and playful, but can also be stubborn. The Dachshund is naturally watchful and will protect its owner if it thinks danger is imminent. Because the Dachshund was originally bred as a hunting dog, it still has a strong urge to dig and hunt. It is therefore important to give the Dachshund sufficient exercise and to teach him when he can and cannot hunt.

Health

As with all dog breeds, it is important to pay attention to the Dachshund's health. Due to its long back and short legs, the Dachshund is prone to back problems, such as hernias. Dachshunds can also be predisposed to obesity, which can lead to other health problems. It is therefore important to keep the Dachshund at a healthy weight and to give it sufficient exercise.

Care

The Dachshund has a short, glossy coat that requires little grooming. It is sufficient to brush the Dachshund occasionally and wash it when necessary. Because the Dachshund has a long back, it is important to lift and carry it correctly. Always lift the Dachshund under his chest and support his hind legs to prevent back problems.

All in all, the Dachshund is a special breed with a rich history and a quirky character. With proper care and sufficient exercise, the Dachshund can lead a healthy and happy life as a loyal companion to his owner.
