The Briquet Griffon Vendéen originates from the Vendée region in western France. The breed originated from crosses between several French hunting dog breeds, including the Grand Griffon Vendéen and the Petite Griffon Vendéen. The aim was to breed a versatile hunting dog suitable for hunting different types of game, such as rabbits, foxes and wild boars.

The Briquet Griffon Vendéen was first exhibited in 1947 and was officially recognized as a separate breed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1954. Today, the breed is still used as a hunting dog, as well as a companion dog.
